BIOGRAPHY & ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Like her art, Cindy Norton’s interests and experiences are an eclectic collection. Her academic studies include a joint honours degree (B.A. Hon. Fine Art/Sociology Anthropology), and an M.A. in Sociology of Art (University of Guelph). This combination enabled her to explore her interest in social theory and visual art.
Cindy’s most recent paintings include a series of expressionist portraits emphasizing the gaze of her subjects. Through the gaze, she seeks to invite the viewer to look past the presented façade. Cindy’s interests in Expressionism and Surrealism/Realism, as well as Social Theory, inform her process, creating “scenes” with a strange tension between reality and fantasy. As with her previous work, engaging the viewer is the most important element.
