ARTIST’S STATEMENT & BIOGRAPHY
Annette ten Cate uses clay to tell the stories of creatures finding a way to survive in a world shared and usually dominated by humans. Her approach has been to depict wildlife subjects in almost human narratives, injecting the scenarios with humour and lightheartedness. By making her work accessible and fun, she hopes to generate a connection that encourages viewers to appreciate and protect the natural world around them. Ten Cate had a career as a graphic artist before shifting her dedication and devotion to clay. She studied Ceramics at Sheridan College and followed graduation with a year-long residency at the Medalta International Artist in Residence (MIAIR) program. She has exhibited work nationally in both group and solo exhibitions and has a studio practice where she lives in Grey County, Ontario.
