BIO

Painting and drawing were always a creative passion for Dixie, but didn’t become a primary focus until later in life. She began her acting career playing Gordon Pinsent’s wife in the CBC series A Gift to Last, and for thirty-five years played leading roles on stages across Canada, including five seasons at the Stratford Festival. Her screen work garnered multiple ACTRA nominations, two Gemini awards (Adderly, Paradise Falls) and one Genie nomination (Ticket to Heaven). For eleven years, she was a professor at Humber College, before retiring to paint.

Dixie is self-taught, and her acrylic paintings express her love for family and the Canadian experience in nature. There are influences from years spent in B.C. and Quebec, but mainly her work celebrates her rural life in Grey County. She has exhibited at the Propeller Gallery in Toronto, Meaford’s Craig Gallery, the Durham Art Gallery, and the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts Gallery in Collingwood; and is a member of the Autumn Leaves Studio Tour.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I was always fascinated, how on both stage and screen, the back of an actor is so powerfully expressive, allowing us to see the world through the characters’ eyes.  Most of my paintings reflect that fascination.  I love backs!
